Course Description:
Basic data and telecommunication networks, OSI Model, Network configuration, Circuit switching, packet switching, Basic switch design, Space and time division switching, Traffic fundamentals, Erlang capacity, Basic traffic models, Signaling systems, SS7 standard, Multiplexing, FDM, TDM, CDM, WDM, Medium access control, Framing and digital carrier systems, SDH, ATM protocols and standards, ISDN, xDSL, X25, IP based networks.
Course Material
Objectives:
To provide a sound understanding of the fundamentals of telecommunication networks and all related non-wireless data networks and to understand the design fundamentals and basic performance evaluation techniques of such networks.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this module, it is expected that
the student will be able to:
1. Understand the main concepts of telecommunication network design
2. Understand basic modern signalling system such as SS7.
3. Solve traditional interconnection switching system design problems.
4. Analyse and evaluate fundamental telecommunication traffic models.
5. Understant the concept of multiplexing and appreciate the difference between TDM and FDM
6. Understand the concept of packet switching
7. Have a good knowledge of present transport standards with a special emphasis on SDH and ATM.
8. Be conversent with current next generation IP related network systems.
